Human Services Technology - Substance Abuse

Curriculum Description

The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community and educational services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.

Students will take courses from a variety of disciplines. Emphasis in core courses is placed on development of relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes in human services. Fieldwork experience will provide opportunities for application of knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Graduates should qualify for positions in mental health, child care, family services, social services, rehabilitation, correction and educational agencies. Graduates choosing to continue their education may select from a variety of transfer programs at senior public and private institutions.

The following represents one way in which the certificate can be completed. Students who aren’t able to follow the recommended curriculum model below should consult their academic advisor to be sure that they take courses in the best order for their success.

Certification/Licensure

Graduates who complete certification/licensure by the State Board qualify for positions as substance abuse counselors, DWI evaluators and educators, residential and half-way house counselors, criminal justice addiction professionals, prevention and education specialists, case managers, and community based program managers.

With educational and clinical experiences, graduates can pursue certification/licensure. This certificate assists students in meeting the educational requirements for certification/licensure through the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB). Students who do not have an Associate’s degree, Bachelor or Master’s degree in a Human Service related field are not likely to obtain employment as a Substance Abuse Counselor with only the Substance Abuse Certificate.

Students intending to utilize this coursework to meet education requirements for certification/licensure should consult with NCSAPPB or a program advisor.  The courses within this certificate  include six (6) clock hours of Professional Ethics Training, two (2) clock hours in HSE 110 and 10 clock hours included in HSE 220
